More About This Recipe

  • There’s just something about sipping on a straw and enjoying a chocolate milkshake that calls up images of soda fountains, malt shops and the sweetness of times gone by. If you wonder why milkshakes are sometimes called “malteds,” that refers to the practice of adding malt powder to the cold drink. Food historians credit a man named Ivar ""Pop"" Coulson. In 1922, when he was working at Walgreen’s soda fountain Chicago, he added two scoops of vanilla ice cream to a malted milk drink, changing the face of frozen desserts forever and making his own mark on American food history. Of course, milkshakes are just the start when it comes to ice cream treats. For more ideas and throwback favorites, check out Betty's Best Ice Cream Dessert Recipes.
