More About This Recipe

  • Back in the 1950s, families first began spending time watching television together. On those cozy evenings enjoying Ed Sullivan or Milton Berle, the parents and kids wanted something they could snack on without taking their eyes off the (tiny, black-and-white) screen. And so the homemade Chex™ Mix recipe was born. Using simple ingredients that were already on-hand in the kitchen pantry, an enterprising 50s chef could pull a batch together during a commercial break and still be back in time for the regularly scheduled programming. Who was the first person to create and serve homemade Chex™ Mix? No one has definitively claimed that honor, although a rumor persists that it was first served in 1955 by the wife of a Chex Mix executive. When everyone at the couple’s holiday party asked for the Chex™ Mix recipe, its popularity grew, until soon it was appearing on boxes of Wheat, Rice and Corn Chex™ being sold nationwide.
